WEBP vs PNG: Technical Overview

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, with an alpha channel for transparency in either mode. It's primarily a delivery format: small, fast to download, and displayed by all modern browsers, but still unsupported or partially supported in some design tools, office software and older operating systems. PNG is the long-established lossless format for graphics with transparency. It stores every pixel exactly using DEFLATE compression and opens in essentially every image program, design tool, game engine and document editor. Converting WebP to PNG decodes the WebP and stores the resulting pixels losslessly, so the PNG is an exact copy of what you see, transparency included. That makes PNG the right target when the image needs to be edited or used as a graphic, rather than a photo.

Why Convert WEBP to PNG?

Transparency is the usual reason. Logos, icons, stickers and product cut-outs downloaded from the web often arrive as WebP, and converting to JPG would put them on a white box. PNG keeps the transparent background and works in tools that don't read WebP, such as older Photoshop, Microsoft Office, Canva uploads in some workflows, and many game and app pipelines.

PNG is also better for editing. Because it's lossless, you can open, change and save a PNG as many times as you like without adding compression artifacts. For screenshots and images containing text that arrived as WebP, PNG keeps edges crisp and readable through every edit.

What Changes During WEBP to PNG Conversion

The PNG is a pixel-exact copy of the decoded WebP: same dimensions, same colors, same transparency. If the WebP was lossy, its compression artifacts are preserved as they are; PNG doesn't add or remove any. Expect a much larger file, especially for photos. In our tests a 160 KB WebP photo became a 1.9 MB PNG, because PNG can't discard detail the way lossy WebP does. Graphics with flat colors grow less. Animated WebPs are converted to a PNG of the first frame.

WEBP to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting WebP to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. The PNG keeps the WebP's alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds stay transparent.

Is the conversion lossless?

Yes. The PNG is an exact copy of the decoded WebP image. It can't add back detail a lossy WebP discarded, but it won't lose anything more.

Why is my PNG so much larger?

PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression. Photos can become 5–10 times larger; simple graphics grow much less.

What about animated WebP files?

PNG output is a still image of the first frame. Use WebP to GIF to keep the animation.

Will the dimensions change?

No. The PNG has exactly the same width and height as the WebP.
