JFIF vs PNG: Technical Overview

A .jfif file is a JPEG image: the JPEG File Interchange Format is the standard container for JPEG-compressed photos, and the .jfif extension usually comes from how Windows saves downloaded JPEGs. The image inside uses lossy DCT compression with 8-bit color and no transparency. PNG is a lossless format with an optional alpha channel. It preserves exactly the pixels it's given and is accepted by every editor, design tool and website. Converting JFIF to PNG decodes the JPEG image once and stores it losslessly. The PNG looks identical to the JFIF, but from then on it can be edited and saved repeatedly without further compression loss.

Why Convert JFIF to PNG?

People convert JFIF to PNG when an image saved from the web needs to be edited or used as a graphic: adding text, cropping into a thumbnail, removing the background, or placing it into a design. PNG is also the format required by many design templates, sticker makers, game engines and app stores, and it avoids the .jfif extension that many upload tools reject.

If you're collecting images for a design project, converting them to PNG gives a lossless working copy for every edit. And if you plan to cut the subject out of its background, you'll need a format that supports transparency, which PNG does and JPEG doesn't.

What Changes During JFIF to PNG Conversion

The PNG has the same dimensions and looks identical to the JFIF image, including any compression artifacts already in it. It doesn't gain transparency automatically: the background stays as it was, ready for you to remove in an editor. The file gets larger, because PNG doesn't use lossy compression: in our tests a 400 KB JFIF photo became a 2.1 MB PNG. For graphics and screenshots saved as JFIF, the growth is smaller.

Tips for Best JFIF to PNG Results

  • 1.If you only need the file to be accepted by an upload form, JFIF to JPG is smaller and just as compatible.
  • 2.PNG won't remove JPEG artifacts already in the image, so start from the largest, best-quality download you can find.
  • 3.Remove the background in an editor after converting; PNG will keep the transparency.
  • 4.Compress the final PNG with CNVRT's image compressor if file size matters.

JFIF to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions

Is JFIF the same as JPG?

Yes. A .jfif file contains a normal JPEG image; only the extension differs.

Will the PNG look different?

No. It's a lossless copy of the image, with the same dimensions and appearance.

Why is the PNG larger?

PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, so photos become several times larger.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No, the background stays as it is. PNG supports transparency, so you can remove it in an editor afterwards.

Can I convert several JFIF files?

Yes. Add multiple files and each becomes its own PNG.
