JPG vs PNG: Technical Overview

JPEG and PNG are both raster formats, but they compress in opposite ways. JPEG divides the image into 8 × 8 pixel blocks and discards fine detail that the eye is unlikely to notice, which is why photos stay small. PNG uses DEFLATE, the same lossless method as ZIP files, so every pixel written to a PNG is recovered exactly when it is opened. PNG also supports an alpha channel for transparency and up to 16 bits per channel, while JPEG is limited to 8-bit color with no transparency. For photographs, PNG's lossless compression is much less efficient than JPEG: expect a PNG of a photo to be several times larger than the JPEG it came from. The key point for this conversion is that it is one-way with respect to quality. Converting to PNG freezes the image exactly as it is now, including any JPEG artifacts, and guarantees that nothing more is lost from that point on. It cannot restore detail that JPEG compression already discarded.

Why Convert JPG to PNG?

The most common reason to convert JPG to PNG is editing. Every time a JPEG is opened, edited and saved again, it is compressed again and loses a little more quality. Converting to PNG first gives you a working copy that can be saved as many times as you like without further degradation, which is useful when you are adding text, annotations or layers over a photo.

Some tools and platforms also require PNG specifically: many design templates, sticker and emoji makers, game engines and app icon pipelines expect PNG input. PNG is the better starting point if you plan to remove the background later, since the result needs a format that supports transparency. And for screenshots or graphics that were saved as JPEG by mistake, PNG stops further artifacts around text and sharp edges.

What Changes During JPG to PNG Conversion

The image keeps its exact pixel dimensions and colors. Because PNG is lossless, the output is a pixel-for-pixel copy of the decoded JPEG, including any compression artifacts already in it. Converting to PNG does not add transparency: the background stays whatever color it was in the photo. File size grows significantly for photographs. In our tests a 400 KB, 1600 × 1200 JPEG photo became a PNG of about 2.1 MB, roughly five times larger. For graphics with flat colors, such as logos, charts and screenshots, the difference is much smaller and the PNG is sometimes comparable in size.

3.

Supplying PNG files to design templates, print-on-demand shops or game engines that require them

4.

Stopping further artifacts around text on screenshots that were saved as JPG

5.

Adding captions, arrows or watermarks to a photo before exporting a final version

6.

Tips for Best JPG to PNG Results

  • 1.Convert from the original, highest-resolution JPEG you have; a PNG made from an already-compressed copy keeps that copy's artifacts.
  • 2.Don't convert just to make a photo "better": PNG preserves the current quality but can't add back detail JPEG removed.
  • 3.Keep the JPEG for sharing and use the PNG as your editing copy; the PNG will be several times larger for photos.
  • 4.If you want a transparent background, remove it in an editor after converting; the PNG starts with the same solid background.

Benefits of Converting JPG to PNG

  • Lossless quality conversion from JPG to PNG
  • Add transparency support to your images
  • Ideal for web graphics and logos
  • No quality loss during conversion
  • Compatible with all image editing software

JPG to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG is lossless, so it preserves the image exactly as it is now and prevents any further loss, but it cannot restore detail that JPEG compression already removed. The PNG will look identical to the JPG.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG stores every pixel without discarding anything, which is inefficient for photos. A photographic PNG is commonly 3–6 times the size of the JPEG. For logos and screenshots the difference is much smaller.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPEG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. PNG can hold transparency, so you can remove the background in an image editor afterwards.

Are the image dimensions changed?

No. The PNG has exactly the same width and height in pixels as your JPG.

Can I convert several JPGs to PNG at once?

Yes. Add several files to the uploader and each one is converted to its own PNG, up to 500 MB per file.
