PDF vs PNG: Technical Overview

PDF pages are made of text in embedded fonts, vector shapes and embedded images. To get a PNG, the page is rasterized into pixels at a set resolution, the same process a PDF viewer uses to display it. PNG stores those pixels losslessly with DEFLATE compression. That's ideal for typical document pages: large areas of white, black text and flat-colored graphics compress extremely well without any of the edge artifacts that lossy formats like JPEG introduce around letters and lines. In our tests, a text page rendered at 300 DPI produced a PNG of about 95 KB versus about 430 KB as a JPG. For photo-heavy pages, the balance reverses and JPG is usually smaller.

Why Convert PDF to PNG?

Choose PNG when the page contains text, tables, charts, diagrams or line art that must stay perfectly crisp: slides for presentations, figures for a paper or blog post, documentation screenshots, sheet music, floor plans and forms. PNG keeps every letter sharp at any zoom, and the file is often smaller than a JPG of the same page.

PNG is also the preferred image format for many editing and design workflows. If you're going to annotate the page, cut out a chart, or place it into a design, a lossless PNG won't degrade with each save, unlike a JPG.

What Changes During PDF to PNG Conversion

The first page is rendered at 300 DPI (a Letter page becomes 2550 × 3300 pixels) and saved losslessly on a white background, matching what you see in a PDF reader. Text and lines are pixel-sharp at that resolution. Only the first page is converted. Text becomes part of the image and can't be selected or searched, and links no longer work. Pages with full-page photos will produce larger PNGs; for those, PDF to JPG is the more compact option. Locked PDFs need their password removed first.

PDF to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions

Is PDF to PNG better than PDF to JPG?

For text, tables and diagrams, yes: PNG stays pixel-sharp and is often smaller. For pages that are mostly photos, JPG is usually smaller.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. Pages are rendered on white, as they appear in a PDF reader, so they're readable in any app or theme.

What resolution is used?

300 DPI. A Letter-size page becomes 2550 × 3300 pixels.

Which page is converted?

The first page. Move the page you need to the front of the PDF first if necessary.

Can I edit the text in the PNG?

No. It becomes part of the image. To edit text, convert PDF to Word (DOCX) instead.
