PDF vs Word: Technical Overview

PDF was designed to show a page the same way everywhere, not to be edited. Internally, text is stored as positioned runs of characters, often without any record of paragraphs, columns or tables; a line of text in a PDF is simply glyphs placed at coordinates. Scanned PDFs are even simpler: each page is just a picture with no text at all. DOCX (Microsoft Word's Office Open XML format) stores a document as structure: paragraphs, styles, headings, tables, lists, images and sections that reflow as you edit. Converting PDF to DOCX means reconstructing that structure from the page layout: working out which characters form words, lines, paragraphs and table cells, and where images sit. For scanned pages, the text first has to be recognized with OCR (optical character recognition).

Why Convert PDF to Word?
