HEIC vs PNG: Technical Overview

HEIC is Apple's container for photos compressed with HEVC (H.265) intra-frame coding. It stores iPhone and iPad photos at about half the size of JPEG, can hold 10-bit color in the Display P3 wide gamut, and can bundle extras like depth maps, thumbnails and Live Photo data. Outside Apple devices, though, many apps can't decode it. PNG is a lossless format supported everywhere. It stores pixels exactly as they are, with optional transparency and up to 16 bits per channel. Converting HEIC to PNG decodes the HEVC-compressed photo and saves every pixel losslessly. Unlike HEIC to JPG, there's no second round of lossy compression, so the PNG is the most faithful universally readable copy of the photo you can make.

Why Convert HEIC to PNG?

Choose PNG over JPG when the photo is going to be edited or used as source material. Designers, photographers and anyone doing retouching, compositing or background removal benefit from a lossless starting point that won't degrade with every save. PNG also opens in every editor, on Windows, Android, Linux and the web, where HEIC often doesn't.

PNG is also the natural choice for screenshots and images of text captured on an iPhone and saved as HEIC, such as photos of whiteboards, documents or screens, where crisp edges matter. And some platforms, including many sticker, design and print-on-demand services, specifically ask for PNG.

What Changes During HEIC to PNG Conversion

The PNG has the same pixel dimensions as the HEIC and is a lossless copy of the decoded photo, so there's no added compression loss. The trade-off is file size: PNG isn't designed for photos, and in our tests a 170 KB HEIC became a 1.8 MB PNG. A typical 12-megapixel iPhone photo can produce a PNG of 15–25 MB. Only the main photo is converted. Live Photo motion, depth data and other auxiliary images inside the HEIC aren't carried over, since PNG can hold only a single image. Photos taken in "Most Compatible" mode are already JPG and don't need converting.

When to Convert HEIC to PNG

1.

Editing iPhone photos in tools that don't read HEIC, without adding JPEG artifacts

2.

Starting a background-removal or compositing project from a lossless copy

3.

Converting iPhone screenshots or photos of documents for sharp, readable text

4.

Supplying photos to design, sticker or print-on-demand services that ask for PNG

5.

Sharing photos with Windows or Android users who can't open HEIC

6.

Keeping a lossless master before making smaller copies for the web

How to Convert HEIC to PNG

Tips for Best HEIC to PNG Results

  • 1.If you only want to share or upload a photo, HEIC to JPG gives a far smaller file with no visible difference.
  • 2.Convert straight from the original HEIC rather than from a copy that has been shared through a messaging app, which may have been recompressed.
  • 3.Plan for storage: PNG versions of iPhone photos are large, so convert only the photos you'll edit.
  • 4.To stop your iPhone saving HEIC, go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible.

Benefits of Converting HEIC to PNG

  • Lossless quality preservation
  • Transparency support for graphics work
  • Perfect for professional editing
  • Compatible with all image software
  • No quality degradation

HEIC to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions

Is HEIC to PNG better than HEIC to JPG?

PNG is lossless, so it's the better editing master. JPG is far smaller and looks the same for viewing and sharing. Choose PNG for editing, JPG for sharing.

Why is the PNG file so large?

HEIC uses very efficient lossy compression; PNG stores every pixel without loss. A typical iPhone photo becomes a 15–25 MB PNG.

Will my Live Photo move?

No. PNG holds a single still image, so you get the main still photo. The motion part of a Live Photo isn't included.

Does the photo keep its resolution?

Yes. The PNG has exactly the same width and height as the HEIC.

Can I convert several HEIC photos at once?

Yes. Add multiple files and each one is converted to its own PNG.
