PNG vs JPG: Technical Overview

PNG stores images losslessly with DEFLATE compression and an optional alpha channel. JPEG takes the opposite approach. The trade-offs are that JPEG has no transparency and that it handles sharp edges poorly: text, thin lines and flat-colored graphics can pick up faint "ringing" artifacts around their edges. So PNG to JPG is ideal for photos and photo-like images, and less suitable for crisp graphics.
