AVIF vs JPG: Technical Overview

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) stores still images compressed with the AV1 video codec inside a HEIF container. It's the most efficient widely available image format: AVIF files are commonly around half the size of an equivalent JPEG, and it supports 10- and 12-bit color, HDR, wide color gamuts and transparency. JPEG is 30 years older and far less efficient, but it is universally supported by operating systems, image editors, office software, printers, cameras and upload forms. AVIF is increasingly what you get when saving images from modern websites and CDNs, which is exactly why it often needs converting: many desktop apps and services still can't open it.

Why Convert AVIF to JPG?

Compatibility. Chrome, Firefox and Safari display AVIF on web pages, but plenty of software still doesn't open .avif files, including older versions of Windows Photos, Photoshop, Microsoft Office and many upload forms and print services. Converting to JPG turns an image that won't open into one that works everywhere.

JPG is also the safe choice when sending images to other people, since you don't know what software they use. If you've downloaded product shots, reference photos or wallpapers that arrived as AVIF, a JPG copy can be edited, printed, attached and uploaded without friction.

What Changes During AVIF to JPG Conversion

The JPG keeps the image's pixel dimensions and is saved at JPEG quality 92. Because AVIF is so efficient, the JPG will be considerably larger: in our tests a 20 KB AVIF became a 246 KB JPG. That's expected and doesn't mean quality was added; the JPG simply uses an older compression method. Transparent areas become white, since JPEG has no transparency. HDR and wide-gamut colors are mapped to standard 8-bit sRGB. If the AVIF was heavily compressed, its softness carries over into the JPG.

AVIF to JPG — Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my computer open AVIF files?

AVIF is a relatively new format (2019). Browsers support it, but many image viewers, editors and office apps, especially older versions, don't yet.

Why is the JPG so much larger than the AVIF?

AVIF's AV1 compression is far more efficient than JPEG's. The JPG looks the same but needs more bytes to store the same image.

Is quality lost when converting?

At quality 92 there's no visible difference. HDR or wide-gamut colors are converted to standard sRGB, which all screens and printers support.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

They become white. Use AVIF to PNG to keep transparency.

Are the dimensions changed?

No. The JPG has the same width and height as the AVIF.
