WEBP vs JPG: Technical Overview

WebP is a modern web image format from Google that can be lossy (based on VP8 video coding) or lossless, and can also carry transparency and animation. It is designed to make web pages load faster, and because browsers support it natively, many sites now serve images as WebP even when the original was a JPEG. JPEG is the 1992 photo standard: lossy DCT compression, 8-bit color, no transparency and no animation, but supported by every device, app, printer, camera and upload form in existence. That's the whole story of this conversion. WebP is often a better format for delivery, but JPEG is still the better format for compatibility, which is why images saved from websites frequently need to become JPGs before they can be used elsewhere.

Why Convert WEBP to JPG?

The most common situation: you right-click an image on a website, save it, and get a .webp file that your photo app, editor, printer or upload form won't accept. Older versions of Photoshop, Microsoft Office, many print services, marketplace listing tools and some messaging apps still reject or mishandle WebP. Converting to JPG makes the image usable everywhere.

JPEG is also the safer choice for long-term storage and for sending images to people whose software you don't control. Email recipients on older systems, clients using legacy design tools and printing kiosks all handle JPG without problems. If you're collecting reference images or product photos from the web, JPG keeps your library consistent.

What Changes During WEBP to JPG Conversion

Pixel dimensions stay the same and the image is saved at JPEG quality 92, high enough that photos look the same as the WebP. Because WebP is usually more efficient, the JPG will be larger: in our tests a 160 KB WebP photo became a 350 KB JPG. JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Animated WebP files become a still JPG of the first frame. If the WebP was lossy, the JPG is a second lossy encode, but at quality 92 any additional loss isn't visible at normal sizes.

WEBP to JPG โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my downloaded image save as WebP?

Many websites serve WebP because it's smaller and loads faster. Browsers display it normally, but when you save it you get a .webp file that some apps can't open.

Will the JPG look worse than the WebP?

No visible difference. The JPG is saved at quality 92 with the same dimensions. It will be a larger file because JPEG compresses less efficiently.

What happens to transparency?

Transparent areas become white, since JPEG can't store transparency. Use WebP to PNG if you need to keep a transparent background.

Can I convert an animated WebP to JPG?

Yes, but JPEG is a still format, so you'll get the first frame. Convert to GIF to keep the animation.

Does it work for WebPs from any site?

Yes, any standard WebP file works, whether lossy or lossless, up to 500 MB.
