TIFF vs PNG: Technical Overview

TIFF and PNG are both lossless formats, but they were built for different worlds. TIFF comes from scanning and print: it supports CMYK, multiple pages, many compression schemes and extensive metadata, but most browsers and many apps can't open it. PNG comes from the web: single images in RGB or grayscale, lossless DEFLATE compression and full transparency, supported everywhere. Because both are lossless, converting TIFF to PNG doesn't touch image quality: each pixel of the page is transferred exactly. What changes is compatibility and, often, size, since PNG's compression is usually more effective than an uncompressed TIFF. This makes PNG the right target when you need a TIFF's exact image in a web page, a design tool or an app.

Why Convert TIFF to PNG?

Use PNG when quality must stay perfect but TIFF isn't accepted. Scanned drawings, diagrams, maps, screenshots and documents with fine text look crisp as PNG, can be displayed on websites, and can be placed in presentations and documents without any compression artifacts.

PNG also preserves transparency, which JPG can't, so TIFF graphics with alpha channels, like logos or cut-out product images from a studio pipeline, keep their transparent backgrounds when converted to PNG.

What Changes During TIFF to PNG Conversion

The first page of the TIFF is converted with its exact pixels and dimensions. Alpha transparency is kept. Multi-page TIFFs produce a PNG of the first page only; use TIFF to PDF to keep all pages. File size is often smaller than an uncompressed TIFF: in our tests a single 1200 × 1600 page came out at about 10 MB versus 11.5 MB uncompressed, and scans with large white areas shrink much more. CMYK TIFFs are converted to RGB, because PNG doesn't support CMYK.

Tips for Best TIFF to PNG Results

  • 1.For photos you only want to share, TIFF to JPG is much smaller.
  • 2.Use TIFF to PDF for multi-page scans.
  • 3.If a printer needs CMYK, keep the original TIFF for print and use the PNG for screens.
  • 4.Compress the PNG afterwards with CNVRT's image compressor if you need a smaller file.

TIFF to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions

Is TIFF to PNG lossless?

Yes. Both formats are lossless, so the image is transferred pixel for pixel.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. TIFF alpha channels are preserved in the PNG.

What happens to multi-page TIFFs?

The first page becomes the PNG. Use TIFF to PDF to keep every page.

Will the file be smaller?

Often, yes, compared with uncompressed TIFFs, especially for scans with large blank areas.

What about CMYK TIFFs?

They're converted to RGB, since PNG only supports RGB and grayscale.
