TIFF vs PDF: Technical Overview

TIFF is the traditional format of scanners, fax systems and professional imaging. A single TIFF can hold many pages, each stored losslessly (uncompressed or with LZW, ZIP or CCITT fax compression), which is why document scanners and multifunction printers often produce multi-page TIFFs. PDF does the same job, pages of images, but with far broader support: every browser, phone and computer opens a PDF, whereas multi-page TIFFs are poorly supported by many viewers, which often show only the first page. Converting TIFF to PDF moves every page into a universally readable document while keeping the scanned images lossless.

Why Convert TIFF to PDF?

Sharing scanned documents. Offices, law firms, medical practices and archives often have years of scans stored as TIFF, and the people receiving them expect PDF. Many portals only accept PDF, and email recipients on phones can't easily page through a multi-page TIFF.

PDF also makes documents easier to manage: it can be combined with other PDFs, annotated, signed, and read in any browser. For archives, PDF (and its archival variant PDF/A) has become the standard for scanned records, while TIFF remains mainly an internal scanning format.

What Changes During TIFF to PDF Conversion

Every page of a multi-page TIFF becomes a page in the PDF, in the same order, so nothing is lost. Pages are sized from the TIFF's own dimensions and resolution, and images are stored with lossless compression, so scans stay exactly as sharp as the originals. In our tests, lossless compression also made the PDF smaller than an uncompressed TIFF (15 MB versus 35 MB for three large pages); TIFFs that were already compressed will be closer in size. Scans aren't run through OCR, so text in the pages is not searchable.

TIFF to PDF — Frequently Asked Questions

Are all pages of a multi-page TIFF converted?

Yes. Every page becomes a page in the PDF, in the same order.

Is there any quality loss?

No. Pages are stored with lossless compression, so the scans are exactly as sharp as the TIFF.

Will the PDF be larger than the TIFF?

Usually not. Uncompressed TIFFs often become noticeably smaller; already-compressed TIFFs stay similar in size.

Is the text in scanned pages searchable?

No, pages are kept as images. Convert the PDF to Word with OCR if you need editable text.

Can I convert TIF files too?

Yes. .tif and .tiff are the same format and both are supported.
