HEIC vs WEBP: Technical Overview

HEIC and WebP are both modern, efficient image formats that improve on JPEG, but they come from different ecosystems. HEIC uses HEVC video coding and is the default photo format on Apple devices. WebP uses VP8 video coding and was built by Google for the web. The practical difference is where they work. HEIC is well supported on iPhone, iPad and Mac but patchy on the web and on other platforms; Chrome, Edge and Firefox don't display HEIC images on web pages. WebP is supported by every current browser and by most CMSs and CDNs, which makes it the right format for publishing photos online. Converting HEIC to WebP keeps you in the modern-format world: you get a compact file that browsers display natively, instead of falling back to a larger JPEG.

Why Convert HEIC to WEBP?

If you publish iPhone photos on a website, WebP is the efficient choice. Uploading HEIC directly usually fails or gets converted to a large JPEG by the platform, while WebP files are small, load quickly and are accepted by WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and most modern site builders.

For bloggers, online stores, real-estate listings and portfolios built from phone photos, converting straight from HEIC to WebP avoids a generation of JPEG compression and keeps pages fast. Faster image loading improves Core Web Vitals, which helps both search visibility and conversions.

What Changes During HEIC to WEBP Conversion

The WebP keeps the photo's pixel dimensions and is encoded as lossy WebP at quality 75, the WebP encoder's standard setting for the web. In our tests a 170 KB HEIC became a 57 KB WebP; real iPhone photos typically end up similar in size to, or smaller than, the HEIC. Colors are converted to standard sRGB for the web. Live Photo motion, depth maps and other extra images in the HEIC aren't included. If you plan to print or edit the photo heavily, keep the original HEIC or convert to PNG instead.

HEIC to WEBP — Frequently Asked Questions

Is WebP smaller than HEIC?

At the quality 75 setting CNVRT uses for WebP, the result is typically similar to or smaller than the HEIC. Both formats are far smaller than JPEG.

Why not upload HEIC to my website directly?

Chrome, Edge and Firefox don't display HEIC images on web pages, so most visitors wouldn't see them. WebP displays in all current browsers.

Will the photo look different?

At normal viewing sizes it looks the same. Colors are converted to the standard sRGB color space used on the web.

Is the resolution kept?

Yes. The WebP has the same pixel dimensions as the HEIC photo.

What happens to Live Photos?

The still photo is converted. The motion part isn't included, since WebP output here is a single still image.
