JPG vs WEBP: Technical Overview

WebP is Google's web image format, built on the intra-frame coding of the VP8 video codec. Where JPEG compresses fixed 8 × 8 blocks independently, lossy WebP predicts each block from its already-decoded neighbors and encodes only the difference, which removes more redundancy at the same visual quality. WebP also adds an alpha channel and animation, neither of which JPEG supports. Google's published studies found lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than JPEGs of comparable quality, and every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (since Safari 14 on macOS Big Sur and iOS 14) displays WebP natively. Because both formats are lossy, JPG to WebP is a re-encode: the JPEG is decoded to pixels and those pixels are compressed again with WebP. The saving comes from WebP's more efficient coding, not from discarding the whole image's detail a second time, and at sensible quality levels the result is visually indistinguishable on screen.

Why Convert JPG to WEBP?

Page speed is the main reason. Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page, and Google's Core Web Vitals, which feed into search rankings, measure how quickly the largest image on the page appears. Serving WebP instead of JPEG cuts image bytes substantially, which improves Largest Contentful Paint on mobile connections and reduces bandwidth costs.

Tools like Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights flag JPEGs under "Serve images in modern formats", and converting to WebP clears that audit. WordPress (since 5.8), Shopify, Squarespace and most CDNs accept WebP uploads, and WebP is also a good choice for app assets and email-free contexts where file size counts. Keep the JPEG where you need compatibility with older software or print workflows.

What Changes During JPG to WEBP Conversion

Pixel dimensions stay the same. CNVRT writes lossy WebP, and in our tests a 400 KB, 1600 × 1200 JPEG photo became a WebP of about 170 KB, a reduction of close to 60%. Savings vary with the image: detailed, noisy photos shrink less, and JPEGs that were already heavily compressed have less to gain. Because this is a lossy-to-lossy conversion, a very small amount of additional loss is possible, but it is not visible at normal viewing sizes. JPEG has no transparency, so the WebP has none either. If you need the absolute original pixels for editing, keep the JPEG; WebP is the delivery copy.

Tips for Best JPG to WEBP Results

  • 1.Resize photos to the largest size they'll actually be displayed at before converting; dimensions affect size more than format.
  • 2.Keep your original JPEGs: WebP is ideal for delivery, while JPEG is still the safer format for print and older software.
  • 3.If you publish with an HTML <picture> element, you can list the WebP first and keep the JPG as a fallback for very old browsers.
  • 4.Don't convert the same image back and forth between JPEG and WebP; each lossy re-encode adds a little loss.
  • 5.Check the result on a real phone connection or with PageSpeed Insights to confirm the improvement.

Benefits of Converting JPG to WEBP

  • Reduce file size by 25-35% vs JPEG

JPG to WEBP — Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller will my WebP be?

Typically 25–35% smaller than the JPEG for a similar look, and sometimes more. In our tests a 400 KB photo became about 170 KB. Already heavily compressed JPEGs shrink less.

Will the photo look worse as WebP?

At normal viewing sizes it looks the same. It is a lossy re-encode, so an expert zooming in to 400% may find tiny differences, but WebP's more efficient compression avoids JPEG's typical blocky artifacts.

Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes, all current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari (Safari 14 and later, including iPhone and iPad) display WebP. Only very old browsers such as Internet Explorer don't.

Is WebP good for SEO?

Indirectly, yes. Smaller images load faster, which improves Core Web Vitals like Largest Contentful Paint, a factor Google uses in ranking. Google Images also indexes WebP files normally.

Can I open WebP files on Windows and Mac?

Yes. Windows 10 and 11 Photos, macOS Preview (Big Sur and later), Photoshop (23.2 and later), GIMP and most modern apps open WebP.
