How PNG compression works
PNG is a lossless format, which is why screenshots and graphics look crisp, but it also makes files large. Most PNG images use far fewer distinct colors than the 16 million the format can store. CNVRT's recommended and strong levels convert images to an optimized palette of up to 256 carefully chosen colors with smooth dithering, typically reducing the size by 50–80% with no visible difference.
The light level is completely lossless: every pixel stays identical while the data is recompressed more efficiently and unnecessary metadata is removed.
Transparency is preserved
Logos, icons and UI graphics often rely on transparent backgrounds. Palette compression keeps full alpha transparency, including soft semi-transparent edges, so your images still sit cleanly on any background.

Is PNG compression lossless?
The light level is fully lossless. Recommended and strong use smart color reduction, which is technically lossy but usually invisible, especially for screenshots, logos and illustrations.
Will transparency be kept?
Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent areas are preserved at every compression level.
Why didn't my PNG get smaller?
Some PNGs are already optimized, and very detailed photos can't be reduced to a palette without visible loss. In that case CNVRT returns your original file rather than a larger or worse one.
