How JPG compression works
JPEG is a lossy format: it discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice. Cameras and phones save JPGs at very high quality (often 92–98), which produces large files. Re-encoding at a carefully chosen quality level, with progressive encoding and optimized color sampling, typically cuts the size by 60–90% with no difference visible at normal viewing sizes.
CNVRT also removes EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model and thumbnails, which can add tens of kilobytes to every photo.
JPG quality levels explained
Light re-encodes at quality 85 with full color detail, a good choice for photographers and printing. Recommended uses quality 75 with 4:2:0 color sampling, the same trade-off used by most major websites, ideal for sharing, email and web pages. Strong uses quality 60 for the smallest file size when you need to get under a strict upload limit.
Tips for the best results
- 1.Need a JPG under 100 KB or 200 KB for a form? Compare the Recommended and Strong sizes; very large photos may also need resizing.
- 2.Photos that were already heavily compressed won't shrink much more. CNVRT will tell you if a level can't help.
- 3.Sideways photos are rotated upright automatically before the rotation tag is removed.
