What is a M4A File?

M4A is an audio file stored in the MPEG-4 container, the same container format as MP4 video but with only an audio track. The "A" stands for audio: Apple popularized the .m4a extension so that audio-only MPEG-4 files could be distinguished from video. Most M4A files contain AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), a lossy codec designed as MP3's successor, which sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. Some M4A files contain ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) instead, a lossless format similar to FLAC. M4A is the standard audio format of Apple's ecosystem: iTunes and Apple Music downloads, iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand exports and many podcasts use it. It also supports rich metadata and cover art, and it plays on Android, Windows 10/11 and all modern browsers.

History of the M4A Format

AAC was developed in the late 1990s by a consortium including Fraunhofer IIS, Dolby, AT&T, Sony and Nokia, and standardized as part of MPEG-2 (1997) and MPEG-4 (1999) as the successor to MP3. The MPEG-4 file format (ISO/IEC 14496-14, 2003) provided its container. Apple adopted AAC for the iTunes Music Store when it launched in April 2003, using .m4a for unprotected files and .m4p for songs protected with FairPlay DRM. Apple removed DRM from the iTunes Store's music catalog in 2009 ("iTunes Plus"), so newer purchases are plain M4A files. ALAC followed in 2004 and was released as open source in 2011. AAC also became the standard audio codec for MP4 video, YouTube, digital radio and streaming, making M4A one of the most widely used audio formats.

When M4A files need to work outside Apple devices, the most common conversion is M4A to MP3 for car stereos, older players and upload forms, and M4A to WAV for editing in DAWs and audio tools.
