M4A vs MP3: Technical Overview

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 file. Most M4As contain AAC audio, the format used by iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads (when DRM-free), iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand exports and many podcasts; some contain ALAC, Apple's lossless codec. MP3 is older and less efficient than AAC, but it's the most universally supported audio format there is: every car stereo, MP3 player, smart speaker, DJ controller, game engine and website audio player handles it. Converting M4A to MP3 decodes the AAC (or ALAC) audio and re-encodes it as MP3, trading a little efficiency for maximum compatibility.

Why Convert M4A to MP3?

Compatibility with devices and software that don't support M4A: older car stereos and MP3 players, some Android apps, older DJ software, some podcast hosts and upload forms, certain editing tools and many Windows programs from the pre-Windows 10 era. iPhone Voice Memos are M4A too, and converting them to MP3 makes recordings easy to share with anyone.

MP3 is also the format most often requested for podcast submission, audio file sharing and online transcription, so converting M4A recordings, interviews and lectures to MP3 avoids rejections and "can't play this file" replies.

What Changes During M4A to MP3 Conversion

The audio is encoded as high-quality variable-bitrate MP3 (LAME -V2, typically 170–210 kbps for music, less for speech), keeping the sample rate and channels. Tags such as title and artist are carried over, and embedded album art is kept. From AAC, this is a second lossy encode, so a small amount of additional loss is possible, but at this quality it's inaudible to most listeners. From ALAC (lossless) it's a single lossy encode. Files protected with Apple DRM (usually .m4p from old iTunes purchases) can't be converted.
