What is a OGG File?

OGG is an open, royalty-free multimedia container format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. An .ogg file most often contains audio compressed with the Vorbis codec, although it can also hold Opus audio, FLAC audio, Theora video and other streams. Audio-only Ogg files are formally recommended to use the .oga extension, but .ogg is by far the most common. Vorbis is a lossy codec like MP3, but it was designed from the start to be free of patents, and it generally delivers better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate, especially at low and medium bitrates. Opus, a newer codec, is even more efficient and is widely used for voice and streaming. OGG Vorbis is especially popular in video games, open-source software and Android, and it's supported natively by Chrome, Firefox and Edge, and by Safari on recent versions.

History of the OGG Format

The Xiph.Org Foundation (originally Xiphophorus) began the Ogg project in the 1990s, partly in response to the Fraunhofer Institute announcing licensing fees for MP3 encoders in 1998. The Vorbis 1.0 specification was released in July 2002 as a completely free alternative to MP3. Ogg was later standardized by the IETF as RFC 3533 (2003). Vorbis gained wide adoption in games (engines from Unreal to Unity and Godot support it), in Spotify's streaming (which used Ogg Vorbis for years), in Wikipedia's media and in Linux distributions. Android has played Ogg Vorbis since its first versions and uses it for many system sounds. The Opus codec, developed by Xiph.Org, Skype and others, was standardized as RFC 6716 in 2012 and is often stored in Ogg files for voice messages, podcasts and streaming.
