What is a WEBM File?

WebM is an open, royalty-free audio and video format designed for the web. A WebM file uses a subset of the Matroska container and holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, all codecs that can be used without patent licensing fees. WebM was built for HTML5 video. All major browsers play it, and browsers can also record it natively: the MediaRecorder API that powers many web-based screen recorders, video messaging tools and meeting apps typically produces WebM. VP9 in WebM is also one of the formats YouTube uses to stream video. Outside the browser, support is less complete. Apple's software historically lacked WebM support (Safari added VP9 WebM playback on recent macOS and iOS versions), and many video editors, presentation apps, TVs and social platforms don't accept WebM files.

History of the WEBM Format

Google acquired On2 Technologies, maker of the VP8 codec, in 2010, and announced the WebM Project at Google I/O in May 2010 together with Mozilla, Opera and others, releasing VP8 under a royalty-free license. The goal was a free video format for the open web, at a time when H.264 licensing was a major concern for browser makers. VP9 followed in 2013, offering roughly 50% better compression than VP8, and YouTube adopted it widely to reduce bandwidth. The Opus audio codec, standardized by the IETF in 2012, became WebM's preferred audio codec. AV1, developed by the Alliance for Open Media, can also be carried in WebM. Apple gradually added WebM playback to Safari, first on macOS Big Sur and later on iOS and iPadOS, bringing WebM to every major browser.
