What is a Word File?

DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. Technically, it's the WordprocessingML part of the Office Open XML standard: a ZIP archive containing XML files that describe the document's text, styles, numbering, tables, headers and footers, comments and tracked changes, along with embedded images and other media. Unlike PDF, a DOCX file describes structure rather than final layout. It says "this is a Heading 1" or "this paragraph uses Calibri 11 pt", and the word processor calculates line breaks and page breaks when the file is opened. That makes DOCX ideal for writing and editing, but it also means a document can look slightly different in different apps or on computers with different fonts. Because the format is an open standard, DOCX is supported not only by Word but also by Google Docs, Apple Pages, LibreOffice Writer, WPS Office and many other tools.

History of the Word Format

For its first two decades, Word used the binary .doc format, which was closed and difficult for other software to read reliably. In response to demands from governments and businesses for open document standards (and competition from the OpenDocument format), Microsoft introduced the XML-based Office Open XML formats, including .docx, with Office 2007. Office Open XML was standardized by Ecma International as ECMA-376 in 2006 and by ISO/IEC as ISO/IEC 29500 in 2008, after a contentious standardization process. Microsoft published the full format documentation, and support spread to other office suites. DOCX is now the most widely used word-processing format in the world, the standard for exchanging editable documents between organizations, and the default download format for Google Docs documents saved in Word format.
