What is a MOV File?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime File Format, a multimedia container that holds video, audio, timecode and text tracks together in a single file. Data is organized into nested "atoms" that describe each track's codec, timing and metadata, a design so successful that it became the basis for the MP4 standard. A MOV file can contain many different codecs. iPhones and iPads record MOV files with HEVC (H.265) or H.264 video and AAC audio, often in 10-bit HDR (HLG / Dolby Vision) on recent models. Professional cameras and editors use MOV with Apple ProRes, a high-quality editing codec, and screen recordings made with QuickTime Player are also MOV. MOV plays natively on Macs, iPhones and iPads and in QuickTime, and modern Windows 10/11 and VLC handle most MOV files, but HEVC and ProRes content may need extra codecs on other platforms, and some websites and devices simply prefer MP4.

History of the MOV Format

Apple introduced QuickTime in December 1991, bringing digital video playback to ordinary Macintosh computers, and MOV was its file format. QuickTime for Windows followed in 1992, making MOV one of the first cross-platform video formats. In 1998, the ISO chose the QuickTime file format as the basis for the MPEG-4 container, standardized as the ISO base media file format and MP4 (ISO/IEC 14496-12 and 14496-14). That's why MOV and MP4 share the same box structure. Apple introduced the ProRes codec in 2007 with Final Cut Studio 2, making MOV the standard container for professional editing. In 2017, iOS 11 switched iPhone video recording to HEVC in MOV, and from the iPhone 12 (2020) onward iPhones record HDR video in Dolby Vision by default, which is why iPhone videos sometimes need converting to play elsewhere.

Common Use Cases for MOV

MOV is everywhere in the Apple world: every video recorded on an iPhone or iPad, every QuickTime screen recording on a Mac, and exports from iMovie, Final Cut Pro and many cameras. In professional video, MOV with ProRes is the standard intermediate format for editing, color grading and delivery between post-production facilities. When MOV files leave that ecosystem, for Windows users, Android phones, smart TVs, websites or social platforms with strict upload rules, the usual step is to convert MOV to MP4 with H.264 video, the most compatible video format. MOV files are also converted to MP3 or WAV to extract audio, and to GIF for short looping clips.

MOV vs Related Formats

MOV and MP4 share the same underlying structure; MOV is Apple's native container while MP4 is the ISO standard with the widest compatibility. MKV is an open container that can hold almost anything, WebM is Google's open web format, and AVI is the older Windows container.

MOV — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a MOV file?

A QuickTime video file, Apple's video format. iPhones, iPads and Macs save videos and screen recordings as MOV.

Is MOV the same as MP4?

They're closely related containers with the same structure, and MP4 was based on MOV. MP4 is more widely supported outside Apple devices.

Why won't my iPhone video play on Windows or Android?

iPhones record HEVC (H.265) video, which some devices and apps can't decode without extra codecs. Converting to H.264 MP4 fixes this.

Can I stop my iPhone recording MOV/HEVC?

Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible records H.264 instead of HEVC. The files are larger but play more widely.

How do I play MOV files on Windows?

Windows 10/11 Movies & TV or Media Player play most MOV files; HEVC may require Microsoft's HEVC extension. VLC plays virtually all MOVs.

Should I upload MOV or MP4 to social media?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safest choice for every platform, though many also accept MOV.
