BMP vs PDF: Technical Overview

BMP is a raw bitmap format: pixels stored row by row, usually without compression, with a header giving the dimensions, color depth and a resolution value in pixels per meter. It's simple and lossless, but large, and it isn't accepted by most document systems. PDF embeds images on pages of a fixed size and supports lossless (Flate) image compression, the same kind of compression PNG uses. A bitmap can therefore be moved into a PDF without losing any detail, and usually in considerably less space than the BMP itself. The result behaves like a document: it prints predictably, opens in every PDF reader and can be combined with other pages.

Why Convert BMP to PDF?

BMP images often come from scanners, older Windows programs, lab and industrial equipment, or screenshots from legacy systems. When those images need to be submitted, reported or printed, a PDF is the accepted format. Converting keeps every pixel intact, which matters for technical images, scanned records and screenshots of data.

PDF also makes images easier to annotate, sign and archive, and you can merge several converted images into one multi-page document, for example a set of equipment readouts, scanned pages or error screenshots attached to a report.

What Changes During BMP to PDF Conversion

Each BMP becomes one PDF page. The image is stored with lossless compression, so every pixel is preserved, and the PDF is typically smaller than the BMP; graphics and screenshots shrink the most. The page size comes from the resolution stored in the BMP, so the whole image fits the page with no cropping. Use "Fit to page" when printing on standard paper. Image text isn't converted into searchable text.

BMP to PDF — Frequently Asked Questions

Is any quality lost converting BMP to PDF?

No. The image is stored in the PDF with lossless compression, so every pixel is preserved.

Will the PDF be smaller than the BMP?

Usually, yes, because the PDF compresses the image losslessly while most BMPs are uncompressed.

What page size is used?

The page is sized from the image and the resolution stored in the BMP, so the whole image fits without cropping.

Can I combine several BMPs into one PDF?

Yes. Convert each image, then combine the PDFs with the Merge PDF tool.

Is the text in my screenshot searchable?

No. The image is embedded as a picture, so its text isn't selectable.
